Masayuki Imai, born in Osaka in 1930, was raised in Hiroshima Prefecture, his father’s hometown. At the age of 17, he embarked on a journey to Okayama, determined to become a ceramic artist. There, he immersed himself in the art of “Bizen’,” one of Japan’s most renowned ceramics.
In 1952, Imai moved to Kyoto, the ancient capital of Japan, to further his studies in ceramic art, particularly focusing on the traditional “Kyoyaki.” It was during this time that he had the fortunate opportunity to study under Yaichi Kusube, the esteemed leader of Japanese modern ceramic artists. Under Kusube’s rigorous guidance, Imai’s talent flourished.
While Imai continued to learn from Kusube, he also took the initiative to embrace and assimilate diverse styles of ceramic art and related techniques. This process allowed him to develop his unique and distinctive artistic style.
